Creating Powerful Partnerships: One + One = Three

By Sandye Linnetz, Systems Goddess

Did you know that two 2X4s nailed together can handle more than 3 times the weight that a single 2X4 can take? It’s a clear case of 1 + 1 = 3. True story. And that, my friends, is today’s metaphor for creating partnership in your business. Think of this as having been a less profound – but more interesting – way to say that two heads are better than one.

Whether the partnership you are dealing with involves you and a co-worker, parent, child, sibling, spouse, friend, business acquaintance or the dry cleaner, it’s still a partnership. And, when those partnerships are powerful; when they work, anything is possible.

What does it mean to be powerful? To say it like it is with conviction based in integrity and with the willingness to stand for what you say while considering other’s points of view. Power has nothing to do with force or convincing. It comes from a place that inspires and moves others to participation and action. In partnership this shows up as individuals who consistently empower one another to be stronger and more confident in taking control of their lives; with integrity and power in communications, interaction and action.

Let’s take a look at what this means in the work place. When you and your team have a powerful partnership in place, everyone talks straight. No hidden agendas. You all know where you stand on any issue, and when you disagree it’s a conversation – not an argument. There’s a commitment to do what is best for the whole and to stay in conversation until that “best” is determined. There is a willingness to hear and consider all points of view. No one “has” to be right. No one is made wrong.

A powerful partnership has ground rules. They are always there… from who opens the door in the morning to who pays the bills and how you will communicate when there’s a problem. So often our ground rules are unspoken. That’s where trouble sneaks into any relationship. Ground rules should be discussed, declared and mutually agreed upon. To work, they must be clear and designed to benefit not an individual, but the partnership itself. Think of the ground rules as your systems for relationship. Look at the way it is… declare the way you want it to be… create the steps, checks and balances to have those POWERFUL partnerships in your company.

Ask yourself:
1. Where will having powerful partnerships benefit the growth and development of this company? (Consider partnerships with co-workers, vendors, clients… and family.)
2. What is the current nature of these partnerships as they apply to this company? (Is there a general sense of “all for the common good” or is each team member looking out only for himself?)
3. Is communication open and honest?
4. What’s the trust factor? Does everyone feel like “someone’s got my back”?
5. What is the current level of integrity – as individuals and then as a team? Do the people here honor their word? Do they consistently do what they said they would do – by when they said they would do it? And when that doesn’t happen, do the people here clean it up and make new promises – with different results?
6. Are we working together or competing? Is everyone participating?
7. What are we doing to build and maintain powerful partnerships?
8. What could it be like around here if each of us was empowered to be the best “me”; strong, confident and inspiring? What if everyone on the team operated like that? How would that look?
9. Do we inspire one another?

Powerful Partnership is the game… and it’s the best game in town. Everyone wins!

Thoughts from your Systems Goddess, Sandye Linnetz, Process Prodigy

We’re human. Roughly (very roughly) translated, what that means is: we are “DON’T FEEL LIKE IT – DON’T WANNA MACHINES”. Most of us – most of the time – simply don’t feel like it and/or don’t wanna.

We don’t want to get out of bed in the morning. We don’t want to clean up after ourselves. We don’t want to tackle that project, make that call or write that report. Don’t want to make the effort… get moving… get started… finish what we started… Now, that doesn’t mean that we “don’t”—-fill in the blank— it just means that, if we “do”, we actually CHOSE to – and not because we necessarily liked the idea. For men it may be out of a sense of honor or duty. For the women it may have appeared as something that needed to be done. That we ever do anything is a tribute to our human spirit. We spend an awful lot of time rising above “don’t wanna”… and doing it (whatever IT is) anyway. That’s the human spirit; that which has us rise above the “nothing is really worth doing and certainly NOT NOW”!

So, why is this the topic of my blog today? Probably because this morning I didn’t wanna. I didn’t wanna wake up, get out of bed, start the coffee or get the paper. Hey, I thought, it’s Saturday and I worked really hard yesterday. I earned the right to do nothing this morning. Besides, I have a headache, we’re out of milk and it’s overcast! (Ever notice how many reasons you can come up with to support “don’t wanna”?) Reasons galore… justifications and excuses…
Obviously, I did wake up. I did get out of bed, made the coffee, got the paper (did my morning sudoku, wrote in my gratitude book, vacuumed, dusted and made the bed), and sat down to write this blog.

Human spirit prevailed! Rather than complaints, justifications and excuses, I chose to have results. And, because I know that my “bent” is to “not do” and then explain WHY I didn’t or couldn’t, I not only didn’t have to feel guilty about not wanting to, I actually got to feel great about bowing to my human spirit (over human animal) and having results!

So what do you want???? REASONS or RESULTS?

Things That Go BLOG in the Night

[display_podcast]Thoughts from Sandye Linnetz, Systems Goddess, Process ProdigyHaving trouble sleeping? Most of us do at one time or another. Just had a thought that since sleep deprivation effects so much about how we are at work and play, this might be the perfect place to discuss sleep; how to get it, enjoy it and benefit from it.I found a great website set up by the National Sleep Foundation (http://www.sleepfoundation.org) which was full of interesting sleep factoids. I have shamelessly “borrowed” some of theirs and a few from other sites, friends and family below:

  • Before the invention of the light bulb (thank you, Tom Edison), people slept an average of 10 hours a night. Presently we’re down to under 7 hours/night on weekdays and about 7.5/night hours on weekends.
  • Over 70 million of us Americans currently have sleep “problems” costing our general economy over $100 billion a year. We’re talking about everything from lost time at work to auto accidents!
  • Sleep “needs” are individual. Seven to nine hours per night seems to be about the average. And these numbers even vary for the same person depending on the circumstances.
  • Most of us know that lack of sleep can make us tired, cranky, low energy, unable to focus and cause an increased risk of “accidents” (from tripping to crashing). Interestingly, a prolonged lack of sleep can also lead to diabetes, heart issues, memory problems, depression and substance abuse. Now we’re getting serious.
  • Most experts seem to agree that when you wake up in the middle of the night – and if you don’t just naturally fall back asleep within 15-20 minutes, you’d be better off getting out of bed and going to another room for a little relaxing music or reading until you feel sleepy again.

And to get to sleep and fall back asleep I have compiled a list of tips and suggestions for you to try. Feel free to add more ideas to the list…BEFORE BED TAKE A WARM BATHDRINK WARM MILK (maybe with honey) OR HERBAL TEA (I love Sleepy Time Tea)… and brush your teeth so that the sugar doesn’t rot your teeth or dry you out during the nightWEAR LOOSELY FITTING PJS… or nothing; and find a very comfortable positionDARKEN AND SOUNDPROOF YOUR BEDROOM You might consider a white noise machine or a softly whirring fan to drown out extraneous sounds, and blackout shades and/or eye mask. FYI: red wavelengths of light are generally less disruptive to sleep than either blue or green…LISTEN TO VERY QUIET, SOOTHING MUSIC AS YOU LAY IN BED (try New Age… it certainly works for me)READ preferably something light, as opposed to a scary thriller.COOLER TEMPERATURES ARE MORE CONDUCIVE TO A GOOD SLEEP (not cold… cooler) Add or remove blankets as necessary.MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A DECENT MATTRESS AND PILLOW You spend a lot of time in bed… take care of yourself.CLEAN UP YOUR BEDROOM – preferably before you get into bed. Apparently, not having to worry about the state of your room can relax you. Besides, making your bed everyday will look good and keep you from having to untangle your blankets at sleep time. A messy bedroom may be an indicator of a messy life… calm down both!RELAX your whole body… a massage would be great! May sound crazy, but even your tongue needs to relax and unclench your jaw. Concentrate on one part of your body at a time. Tense it and then relax it. Repeat 5 –10 times.PRACTICE DEEP BREATHING EXERCISES AT BEDTIMEFor example: lie on your back in bed with your eyes closed and concentrate on “breathe in… breathe out”. See if you can “connect” the in and out… so that your breathing has the feel of breathing in a circle. Concentrate on the breathing and you’ll probably never get past 5 minutes!GO FOR THE BRAIN EXERCISE you may even bore yourself to sleep! Count sheep in a field (that’s original, huh?), think of a flower or place or person for each letter of the alphabet; count as high as you can by 7’s or do mathematical calculations.GO TO YOUR “SPECIAL PLACE” in your head, of course… whether that would be a deserted island or a tropical paradise, a water spot is generally most relaxing. Waterfalls, fountains, streams and floating… they all work.MEDITATE, VISUALIZE OR PRAY Meditate with a calming mantra repeated to relax yourself, or visualize yourself sleeping peacefully. With your eyes closed… listen to and feel your surroundings. Silently describe what you feel, hear and smell. Release each thought as you think of it. Make a mental list of all the things you could be grateful for today. Gratitude is an amazing relaxer! Hand over whatever is on your mind to the deity of your choice. You will lower your heart rate and relax your body which makes sleep much easier to come by.CONSIDER AN OVER-THE-COUNTER SLEEP AID like a form of melatonin, valerian root, chamomile, hops, kava kava or lemon balm. Maybe you ould find some “turkey pills”… doesn’t the tryptophan always make you sleepy on Thanksgiving? Just be careful here…DON’T EAT OR DRINK… TAKE A MINI FAST… FOR TWO TO THREE HOURS BEFORE GOING TO BED(This is also a great tip for those of you who are dieting!) OR…JUST BEFORE BED TRY ONE OF THESE SLEEP INDUCING AND/OR CALMING FOODS:BANANASCHEESEMUSTARDPICKLESLETTUCETURKEYNUTS OR TRAIL MIXAVOID WATCHING THE CLOCK and turn off the TV… it can actually wake you up! And no internet playing!THINK OF WEIRD, IMPOSSIBLE THINGS THAT MAKE NO SENSE cuz “nonsense” will lower your level of consciousness. Or, simply close your eyes and focus on the blackness. See what you see when your eyes are closed. FOCUS on the “no”thingness.SLEEP WITH A PET OR A STUFFED ANIMALEXERCISE but not just before bed… that will get your adrenaline going, and speed up both your heart and breathing. Instead, get your work out in the late afternoon.Okay, happy sleepers… you probably knew that this was coming…

CREATE A PROCESS FOR YOUR SLEEPING

Experiment with some of these ideas until you figure out what works for YOU. Then develop your personal SLEEP SYSTEM; a process for falling asleep and staying asleep. Know ahead of time what you will do to get ready for bed, in bed and when there is a glitch in the planned pattern, a process to get yourself back to sleep.

HAPPY SLEEP TIME, Prodigies!

How to Systemize Your Business: And Breathe

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

[display_podcast]Thoughts from Sandye Linnetz, Systems Goddess, Process ProdigyTake a breather. That’s a break from everything. It’s a momentary, energizing, peaceful respite from the stress and tension of your otherwise incredible workday. You know you need it. You know you want it. So, get all “Nike” on yourself, JUST DO IT!Here’s what you do… STOP everything for five minutes (you can work your way up to 20 minutes, later). Put the computer into sleep mode, close your door, put on the answering machine and give yourself that much needed, well-deserved break. Remember back to the time when your mommy MADE you take a nap… don’t you wish there was still someone around to do that? You may have resisted that imposed nap when you were a kid; bet you’d love to have someone make you take a nap now, huh? Okay, until you’ve made this a habit and YOU take charge of your naptime, think of the Process Prodigy Goddess as your mom. Here goes…Take a nap!!!!No cot and blankey available? No problem. Turn your chair away from your desk. Plant your feet firmly on the ground. Rest your arms on the – you guessed it – arm rests, and close your eyes. Now breathe… through your nose… slowly… in and out… in and out… just breathe. LET GO of the deadlines (they’ll still be there when you get back) and concentrate on the stillness within. Breathe in… Breathe out… Connect the in and out and concentrate on circle of breathing. It may help to repeat something over and over as you breathe. Try repeating: “Balance in all things.” Or “Thank you for the stillness within me”. Or make up your own peaceful, restful mantra…When you are concentrating on your breathing and being “present” to the peace, you may actually lose track of time. You may actually fall asleep. And then, when you are back to consciousness, give yourself a few moments to reflect and sit silently… to get back to your day from a new place; one of calm and balance.Yep, the work is still there, but you may be able to see it differently now. Slow it all down. Deal with it from a place of “love to” instead of “have to”. Get back to the joy that got you to take all of this on in the first place. The fun is still there, and sometimes all you need is a short break to find it again. And… breathe!© 2007 Beth Schneider, Process Prodigy, Inc. Want to reprint this article? Thoughts from Sandye Linnetz, Systems Goddess, Process Prodigy

Contact… and staying in it, that’s what works in all relationships. Whether it’s a vendor, a client or your mother, keeping up the communication and being fully expressed can make the difference between living in the past or being in the NOW.

Rather than “wondering” what people are up to, or just thinking about them, consider making the contact… now and in person, instead of just in your thoughts. Recently a friend shared this with me: When a thought about someone pops into your head, stop and contact them. You never know what the result will be… And, making that connection could produce a miracle! It may be that your vendor is just about to have an amazing sale. Your client may need something. Your mother may want to share a memory. That old friend may be thinking about you, too. How often have you commented that, “Wow, I really made that call at the right time?”

Just recently I had a thought about a friend in Texas. There had been no contact for quite a while; both of us guilty of ignoring the “urge” to find out how the other was doing. So, I picked up the phone and called. As it turned out, he was as happy to hear my voice as I was to hear his and he was actually going to be in California (where I am) two days later! We marveled at the “timeliness” of my call. End result???? We actually got to spend time a great together and I reconnected with his family who included me in an amazing New Years Eve celebration after he left. At the party I made a dozen new acquaintances who will, undoubtedly either become new friends or business associates.

“I was just thinking about you!” “You called at the perfect time! I was just dialing you!” “This is perfect, I need some ____ and I can get it from you.” “I was just talking to ____ about you. Do you want to do some work for him?” No conversation is without value, and neither is a connection. You know that, don’t you? Pick up that phone and make the call or type up that email. When you are on the playing field of life and actually PLAY, amazing things happen. So, consider this an invitation to get out and PLAY. Make that connection and do it NOW.

Make a list of people you haven’t spoken to in a while and start re-connecting. Get out on the playing field. Who can you call? Who’s been on your mind? Who have you put off contacting because of time, fear or stubbornness? Yep, those people… You can’t win if you don’t play and staying in contact is a contact sport!
