To Delegate or Not to Delegate…

Why is That Such a Hard Question?

Excuses, excuses, I have heard them all.
“It is faster if I just do it myself.”
“I’m afraid that I will forget to tell them something important.”
“No one does it better than me.”
“I don’t know what to delegate.”
“I can’t afford to hire anyone.”
“I’m too critical of other people’s work.”
“If I give up control over everything, things will start to fall through the cracks.”

If is a farce that you need to have a big fancy office with a mahogany desk and a six-line phone to be a delegator. Even if you work from a home office and only have $100 a month to spend, you will be amazed at how far a little help will go and grow your business. I know this from personal experience because I started out with that same budget.

As an internal manager I had the fancy desk, the six phone lines and the full staff to delegate to. Then I moved to a pretty desk in a home office where I started with a part–time assistant and a $100 a monthly budget.

What Would Oprah Do?

You know that in order to grow your business, you need to grow your team. Can you imagine Oprah Winfrey booking all her own guests? How about Bill Gates cutting the checks for all of Microsoft’s invoices? What about if Ray Krocs, the founder of McDonalds, had decided to flip all those burgers with his own hands? Could any of these people have built the empires they have without the right team?

In case you are wondering, the answer is NO.

Why Do We Think We Can Do It Alone?

Yet as Entrepreneurs, Busy Professionals and Network Marketers there is something within us that fights against help. It’s almost like there is some right of passage in being able to “do it all” ourselves. But the reality is, you cannot “do it all” and focus on your strengths without stretching yourself in too many directions.

You may not want to open the next McDonald’s, but how much time and money are you losing as a coach, consultant, solo-preneur or busy professional when you are doing it all yourself?

Myth #1 –

It’s To Expensive to Bring in the Help I Need

Meet Susan. Susan is a coach. Susan loves working with her clients to help them change their lives. Susan has several streams of marketing that she wants to track.

She wants to track her referrals.

She wants to track those people who pay for her package on a monthly basis by credit card.

She wants to track those who pay by check, etc. Not to mention all the regular accounting and bookkeeping stuff that we all love doing.

Susan hates accounting, but like many, she was working with a limited budget. She figured she was saving herself a ton of money by handling her own books. OK, now let’s look at the numbers. She was spending about 10 hours a month, struggling through all the bookkeeping. Her time is worth $100 per hour. In other words she was really spending $1000 a month on her bookkeeping.

To top it off, she wasn’t doing a great job and did not know how to set up her QuickBooks system to give her the tracking reports she really wanted.

Susan decided it would make sense to delegate her bookkeeping to a professional bookkeeper who charged $25 per hour. The bookkeeper would cost her about $200 per month. But brining in the Bookkeeper freed up 10 hours of time which would free Susan up to take on another coaching client. Instead of fussing with invoices and reports she was going to get to do what she loves – COACHING.

Here’s the best part. She would end up paying $200 a month for bookkeeping, but could make an extra $1000 per month. So really she makes an extra $800 per month by giving away a task that she hates doing and doesn’t do well.

Myth #2 –

Adding People to the Ship Will Just Make it Sink

You may have heard the saying, “throwing people at the problem.” You may be concerned that things will get out of control because you have to depend on someone else.

And they could.

Why?

Because here is how most people delegate…

Let’s say you were on a sinking ship. You are shoveling water as fast as you can out of the boat. Water is up to your knees and you decide you need some help. So here comes your first mate. You don’t give her any tools or instructions other then to shovel as quickly as possible. So she does what she thinks is best, which is to use a cup to shovel water out of the boat. You run to the front of the boat to check on the other passengers. Finally, you come back to see your helpers progress and things are worse off than when you left! You were shoveling with a bucket and she’s been using a cup. So you immediately dive back into shoveling water out of the boat. Now what just happened? You’re paying someone, your still doing the job yourself and you don’t have time to do the other important things, like call the coast guard to help save your sinking business… er ship. Why would you want to delegate if this is what it is all about?

BUT (there’s always a big but) your ship won’t sink if you delegate effectively . If you had taken the time to explain to your first mate

Then when you came back to check on her it would be a totally different story. The job would be done.

And that is exactly what this program is all about. By the time you are done, you’ll know exactly what to do to make your first mate empty out that boat faster than you can say SOS.

Delegation is about handing over authority. For many, that concept is just plain scary. You never know what will happen when you are giving up control.

But the good news is, it doesn’t have to be scary.

You have more control than you think. It is difficult for a skilled Assistant, Employee or Virtual Assistant to be unsuccessful when you have clearly defined what is to be done and what the outcome should be.

There is a secret to making delegation work.

The key to controlling delegation is to establish what the tasks are, how they should be completed and what the final outcome looks like BEFORE you assign the task to someone. Yes, you heard that right, you actually have to think about and plan what you want BEFORE you give it away. All those stories you hear about things going haywire and getting worse is because the wrong people are thrown at problems, not given instruction, are not supported or they are simply not given the proper tools to be successful.

No more excuses. Give yourself a gift which is designed to help you understand, absorb and implement immediately.
